Job Summary

 

The Chief of Staff & Director of Special Projects (“Chief of Staff”) is a critical role that works at the highest levels of the company and with Blackstone on only the most important issues facing the business. The Chief of Staff will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and senior leadership team to facilitate strategy, operations, and business planning, enhance the effectiveness of the senior leadership team, coordinate high-priority cross-functional initiatives, support the cascading of communications, and lead change management efforts.  In addition, the Chief of Staff will interact regularly with Blackstone personnel to facilitate communications with ShopCore, and drive follow up efforts.  The position will require a person with a unique combination of skills: a natural leader with the ability to develop strong relationships within and outside of the firm, and an individual willing to roll up their sleeves to produce a high volume of high-quality work product, reflecting both strategic thinking and attention to detail.

From day one, the Chief of Staff will have an immediate impact on our productivity, streamlining initiatives, facilitating program and project management, and communicating objectives within the leadership team and between departments. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in a business management role, with a special focus on executive-level advising and functional team collaboration.  The Chief of Staff will:

  • Coordinate strategic business initiatives from development through successful execution under the guidance of senior leadership and departmental heads
  • Assist the senior leadership in decision-making, program management, and initiative implementation across strategy, operations, and organization
  • Act as a critical linkage between the senior leadership team and the rest of the organization, Blackstone, and partner entities

Essential Job Functions

 

What you will do:

 

General

  • Help ensure that the leadership team is a high functioning group, with a clear agenda and strong follow through.
  • Serve as liaison between the leadership team and other team members regarding ShopCore culture, project updates, proposals, and planning
  • Build and develop relationships with all team members for increased efficiency and greater responsiveness in existing operations, and help to define new operational strategies
  • Act as a primary driver of internal communications, alongside the CEO

 

Operations

  • Business Reporting: Partner with the leadership team to establish internal company reporting standards, including annual / quarterly goals.
  • Governance: Partner with the CEO and other leadership team members to facilitate internal reviews of organization performance, assess new business partnerships, and review progress of key initiatives.
  • Board and Company Presentations: Partner with the leadership team to develop presentation materials for Board and company meetings.
  • Portfolio Company Partnership: Support ShopCore’s further collaboration with other portfolio companies
  • Other: Maximize the effectiveness of the leadership team by helping them balance priorities, communicate effectively, participate in the relevant meetings and connect with business partners and employees.

 

Strategy and Business Planning

  • Strategy: Partner with the CEO to facilitate strategic planning processes, and develop and manage plan to ensure successful execution of strategy.
  • Business Planning: Partner with leadership team to develop actionable business plans, ensure communication to departments and establish appropriate tracking and reporting mechanisms.
  • Special Initiatives: Partner with Blackstone and leadership team to manage and execute initiatives.
  • Other: Demonstrate discretion and professionalism when working with leadership team on sensitive business and organizational issues, manage ambiguity and propose workable solutions to challenging problems.

Change Management

  • Change Management: Implement change management processes and tools to help facilitate large scale, business transformations.
  • Collaboration: Identify opportunities to create internal and external collaboration and synergies.

Project Management

  • Project Management: Autonomously lead projects having moderate to high levels of complexity by providing strategic direction to project teams, peers, and stakeholders to drive results.

Qualifications

 

What you should have:

 

  • Minimum 7 years of work experience, including some combination of the following:
  • Management consulting, whether at a consulting firm or in an internal consulting capacity
  • Financial services such as investment banking
  • Inhouse strategy and operations leadership
  • Demonstrated interest in retail, retail estate, and related areas
  • Experience creating business strategies and business plans.
  • Strong change management skills with ability to drive organization, process, and technology change.
  • Strong project management experience. Including planning, designing, managing, and executing projects to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Ability to develop and design executive-level presentations and memoranda, and to deliver presentations to small and large groups. The candidate should be a best-in-class communicator across all medium.
  • Strong quantitative skills.
  • Outstanding judgment and ability to handle sensitive information with care.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with obsessive attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Readiness to work at a fast pace to meet the demand of a high-profile role within a high-performance environment.
